The Next Stage

I woke up on Sunday and the previous night came flooding back into my memory, causing me to sit up with a start. I tried to figure out if what had happened was real or imagined. I hurried to my mirror and saw the panicked look in my eyes which I tried to hide. I examined my reflection. I did not look any different, but I felt different, as if I had encountered some new stage of my life that had been previously blank and unexplored. I smiled tentatively at myself in the mirror. I paced around my room for a while before I finally decided what I wanted to do.

I picked up my phone and dialed David’s number. We had given each other our numbers a long time ago. I had never seen a reason to call him because we saw each other almost every day but I needed to talk to him right now.

The phone rang three times before he answered and when he did he sounded really tired.

“Hello?” he said, yawning into the phone.

“Oh, I’m sorry, I did not think you would still be asleep, I’m sorry for waking you up,” I apologized.

He seemed to come more alert as he heard who it was. “No, its fine, I was just getting ready to get up really, it’s okay,” he assured me.

I paused, not knowing why I had wanted to call him anymore but still wanting to hear his voice.

“So, what did you want?” he asked.

“Well, are you doing anything today?” I asked hesitantly.

“Well we have church services until three today. We are having potluck today. Why, do you have plans?”

Oh…we had never really discussed Sundays. “No, I don’t have any plans,” I replied.

“You are welcome to come to services,” he said.

“Well, maybe some other time,” I hedged.

“Well how about something after services?” he suggested. I was surprised, but glad he hadn’t blown me off after not wanting to go to his church.

“Like what?” I asked breathlessly, this is what I had been hoping for.

“We could go see a movie or get dinner,” he proposed.

“Okay, I don’t really care what we do, let me just check with my parents first.”

“Okay, call me back and tell me what they say.”

“I will, bye,” I hung up then set the phone down. Suddenly my stomach was full of butterflies that fluttered uncomfortably in there. I was very nervous about talking to my parents about guys in general and if they saw how much I had fallen for David, then they were probably going to be very concerned.

I decided it would be much better to just get things out in the open as much as possible. So I walked out of my room and went to the kitchen where my mom was making waffles and my dad was reading the paper at the table.

“Good morning,” they both said as I entered the room.

“Morning,” I said. They did not really look at me, just glanced up to say hi, and then carried on with what they were doing so I decided to wait until we were all eating to ask.
